Rachel Matthews

Dr Rachel Matthews is an independent academic. Her research emphasises the evolution of local journalism and the local newspaper and its significant impact on our communities to provide insights which shape our understanding of media today. She is the first to chart the political economic development of the local newspaper industry in the UK. Through the application of this historical lens, she informs the current landscape for local journalism practice. Dr Matthews holds a PhD in Journalism Studies and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Senior Fellow of Advance HE.
