Where is Jönköping University headed?

Professor Salem Seifeddine completed his PhD at Linköping University in 2006 and has since held key leadership roles in research and academic administration. At the School of Engineering (JTH) at Jönköping University, he worked as a researcher in Materials and Manufacturing and later served as Head of Research. On October 1, 2023, he stepped into the role of Vice President at Jönköping University.
As a professor in the Department of Materials and Manufacturing at JTH, Salem is well-known for his research on how microstructure, defect formation, and mechanical properties interact in cast aluminum alloys. His work has made significant strides in material science and has been invaluable to the manufacturing industry. Jönköping University's Board decision to appoint Salem as Vice President highlights their confidence in his leadership and his ability to advance both research and education. The Vice President serves as the rector’s deputy and takes over their responsibilities when needed.
In this interview, Salem shares his vision for JU and and his plans for driving the university’s continued success.
How has the transition to the role of Vice President been for you?
It's been really exciting and a great learning experience. My colleagues and I are involved in several university-wide projects, such as integrating AI into our academic environment, improving quality assurance, collaborating with the local community, and pushing forward with internationalization.
How has your research experience influenced your work and strategies as Vice President?
Contributing to sustainable societal development is something we at JU are all committed to. It’s both an opportunity and a necessity. I am keen to ensure that JU continues to integrate sustainability perspectives into our education, research, and support services.
What challenges and opportunities do you think JU might face?
JU faces various challenges and opportunities that need a well-rounded approach to boost the university’s quality, appeal, and innovation, while addressing current societal needs. Key challenges include securing enough funding to support our core activities, building infrastructure for top-notch education and research, and staying inclusive and attractive to talented individuals. On the flip side, JU’s strengths lie in our opportunities for interdisciplinary research and education, as well as in the strong programs we develop in partnership with the public sector and industry.
How do you think JU will develop in the future? Where are we headed?
JU will continue to be a hub for relevant education, research, and innovation with a focus on sustainability, collaboration, and responsible internationalization. Addressing societal challenges requires partnerships between universities, businesses, government agencies, and other stakeholders. By enhancing collaboration across disciplines and supporting multidisciplinary research and education with national and international partners, JU has a unique opportunity to develop innovative and sustainable solutions that benefit both society and the university itself.
