The conference GeM 2018 is being organized by the CCD research group (Communication, Culture and Diversity, www.ju.se/ccd) Opens in new window. within its international conference series (Read more on CCD’s webpage).

GeM 2018 will constitute an occasion to map and explore genres and media landscapes on the move in a range of areas, aesthetic and representative genres, as well as pragmatic and communicative ones. Concerns of GeM 2018 include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • how genres are constructed, crossed and transformed in continuums,
  • how people make use of them in every-day-life for different purposes,
  • how the relationships between genres and media landscapes are being addressed (for instance which units of analysis are being deployed),
  • which criteria, i.e. modes, text, sound, image, gestures, come into play in different genres and media, and
  • how these are present, chained and intertwined.

GeM 2018 aims to create a multi-disciplinary platform that will bridge the gaps between different theoretical constructs regarding genres, as well as institutional usage and every-day practices in a media dense society. The conference will bring together scholars from the disciplines of Media Studies, Education, Arts and Humanities, including professionals from the sector of culture, with the aim of going beyond the polarized academic area of genre studies. It is in this manner that GeM 2018 will also go beyond issues that arose at the International 2013 Copenhagen Genre Conference External link, opens in new window. and the forthcoming international 2018 Mumbai Mediamorphosis, Identity and Participation conference External link, opens in new window..
