Language Requirements
All applicants to programmes (and summer courses) are required to meet the standard English language requirements corresponding to English 6 in the Swedish upper secondary school system.
Everyone can meet the requirement by achieving the required score on an internationally recognised English test. Completed upper secondary and university studies in some countries can also fulfill the requirement.
Accepted tests and minimum results required
- TOEFL iBT Test
- We accept the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition Test and TOEFL iBT Paper Edition. The scoring criteria and score scale are the same as a TOEFL iBT Test test taken at a test center.
- We do not accept TOEFL ITP, TOEFL iBT MyBest score or TOEFL Essentials.
- Internet based: Score of 20 (scale 0-30) in written test, total score of 90
- Paper-based: score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in written test, total score of 575
- The TOEFL test result cannot be older than 2 years.
- IELTS Academic
- An overall score of 6.5 and no section below 5.5.
- We do not accept IELTS General Training or the IELTS indicator test
- We also accept IELTS One Skill Retake (Academic).
- JU can accept test results as long as they're available online for verification.
- An overall score of 6.5 and no section below 5.5.
- University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL)
- C2 Proficiency (CPE), minimum overall score 200 (points awarded since 2015) or
- Cambridge English: Proficiency
- C1 Advanced (CAE), minimum overall score 180 (points awarded since 2015), or
- Cambridge English certificate level C1, minimum score 180, or
- Cambridge English: Advanced
- Please note: that a First Certificate in English does not meet the criteria, regardless of the result.
- Submitting your Cambridge English test results:
- Submit a scan of your Certificate or Statement of Results.
- Make sure you are registered at Cambridge Candidate Results Online portal and that the test is made available to Jönköping University so that we can verify your results.
- The test result has no expiry date.
- Cambridge Michigan Language Assessments
- University of Michigan, Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE)
- The test result has no expiry date.
- Pearson PTE Academic or Pearson PTE Academic Online
- Score of 62 (writing 61)
- Pearson PTE Academic test results must be made available to Jönköping University, Sweden by the testing centre.
- The PTE test result cannot be older than 2 years
- Duolingo English Test
- The minimum requirement is an overall score of 125
- JU only accepts the Duolingo English test when application has been placed through the JU Direct Application (ju.se/en/admissions)
- Duolingo English Test results must be made available to Jönköping University
Exemptions to the English test
If you can document any of the following, you are not required to submit a formal English test:
- Applicants with an upper secondary/ high school degree where English is the only language of instruction. Evidence must be provided showing the student's upper secondary tutoring language.
- Upper secondary English instruction in some countries qualifies as equivalent to English 6/English B in Sweden. Check here to see if you meet the English requirements External link, opens in new window. based on your upper secondary/ high school studies.
- Applicants with a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university in India, specifically holding a Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Technology, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Computer Applications degree will meet the English language requirement.
- Applicants with a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university in Turkey where the language of instruction was English (and this is clearly stated on the official transcript or diploma) will meet the English language requirement when applying through the JU Direct Application (ju.se/en/admissions).
- Students with a Bachelor's degree (equivalent to a Swedish kandidatexamen) where English is the main subject (major) meet the English requirement.
- Students with a Bachelor's degree (equivalent to a Swedish kandidatexamen) from Botswana, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia or Zimbabwe.
- Students with 60 higher education (HE) credits from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, Great Britain, Ireland, Malta, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, or English speaking parts of Canada. The language of instruction needs to be English.

Exchange Students
Generally speaking, the home university guarantees a student's fluency in English, by signing a course confirmation statement. Although language test scores are not formally required, all students are expected to meet the university's minimum English requirements and students must receive a signature from a representative of their home university guaranteeing their fluency in English.
