Carbon footprint challenges and opportunities for the aluminium industry
The demand for aluminium is changing and increasing rapidly due primarily to electrification and changes in the automotive industry. The predicted increase in need has put minerals for aluminium refining onto the Critical Raw Materials list. The importance of aluminium and a resilient supply chain is now under consideration, and the use of Nordic minerals is discussed in the webinar. In conjunction with the massive demand increase, climate change's impact must be managed. Primary aluminium has a large carbon footprint, and research and pilot plants are being designed for inert electrodes. This is being reviewed in the webinar.
Similarly, aluminium is a highly recyclable material, and even though recycling has a much lower carbon footprint, the whole issue with melting and recycling has the potential to be decarbonised. In addition to decarbonising, actions are possible to capture the carbon dioxide emitted close to its source. These topics are covered in the webinar.
