There has been little progress in the development of sun visors over the years, and they´re not adapted for circularity. This thesis explores how a sun visor can be optimized through sustainability using a certification called Cradle to Cradle Certified®.

Sustainability has received more attention in today's companies. It can be complicated to assess and improve a product's sustainability profile because there are many different aspects that is to be considered. It is important for companies to be able to prove to their customers that their products are sustainable and avoid accusations of greenwashing. By implementing a sustainability certification called Cradle to Cradle Certified® (C2C), it gives companies a proof that their products are sustainable.

This thesis describes how a car sun visor can be designed in order to meet the C2C certification. The thesis was performed in a collaboration with Polestar, a performance electric car brand with the goal to build sustainable electric cars and help create a sustainable society. The aim of the project was to present how a sun visor from a Polestar model would meet the C2C requirements, and to develop a concept and prototype that can potentially receive a C2C certification. The project also aimed to present important conclusions about how the C2C methodology affects the product development process.

The project was divided into two main sections, one deeper study of C2C and one conceptual design study. An implementation of the C2C methodology into the product development process resulted in concepts that met the C2C and Polestar requirements.

The final result is a conceptual sun visor that is well adapted for C2C. The concept has focus on sustainable and safe materials, functionalities for circularity, with an extra focus on a simple disassembly process.

Cheers!
