Student support is an important function to enable access to education for all.

Teachers need to be responsive to students and take their problems and needs into account. For example, for students with disabilities, this is particularly evident, as otherwise there may be a case of discrimination. However, even more short-term problems may need to be taken into account.

Different types of support

Below is a list of different types of support for students that you as a teacher should be aware of. These are supports that already exist or are being developed at JU.

Supplemental Instruction (SI), is a pedagogical method based on collaborative learning in groups. SI can be seen as a complement to regular teaching and involves more experienced students in group discussions to give the less experienced ones tools for a better study strategy, a deeper understanding of the subject and to prevent dropouts from the programme.

Possible benefits of SI

University

Improved pass rates, reduced drop-outs, contributes to broader participation

Student

Better understanding for international/national students to understand Swedish academia. Strengthens student for future courses, confidence, motivation, immersion.

SI Leader

Deepened understanding of the subject, practice leadership.

Teachers

Reduced workload for teachers, (re-examination), can refer students to SI sessions, feedback from SI leaders on perceived difficulties in course modules.

As an employer, Jönköping University wants to offer an inclusive work and study environment where you as an employee and student are treated in a respectful manner and where everyone is given equal opportunities to develop, thrive and perform well.

Here you can read more about how JU works to combat discrimination and promote equal rights and opportunities.

Students with disabilities should have the same opportunities to pursue higher education pedagogical studies as other students. Therefore, there is the possibility of so-called pedagogical support.

How does this affect me as a teacher?

For you as an examiner, course coordinator and/or teacher in a course, this means that certain students attending your course may be entitled to pedagogical support and may come to you with questions or requests related to this.

The following applies:

  • The student must present a notice of decision/recommendation on pedagogical support to the course coordinator/concerned teacher/examiner at the start of the course.
  • If the message contains decisions/recommendations on accommodations in connection with an examination (not a room examination), the student must notify the examiner at least 14 days before the examination is to take place.
  • The message will indicate the actions that you as a teacher/examiner need to plan for regarding accommodations related to the teaching and/or examination situation.
  • The examiner concerned is responsible for some of the adjustments required to carry out the examination, e.g. submitting the examination on USB memory, alternative forms of examination (e.g. oral and split examination).
  • Coordinators may contact the examiner/teacher in charge of the course to consult on an alternative form of examination, but it is always the examiner who decides on the same.
  • In the case of adaptations in room exams such as extra exam time, exam on computer, longer time, the exam coordinator is responsible for these adaptations. The student notifies the exam coordinator via the case management system
  • If the support measure requires additional resources, the teacher concerned can contact the coordinator when these are initiated, so that compensation for this can be given to the school
  • NOTE! Students who are unable to present a decision on granted educational support are always referred to the coordinator.

Information for staff

Student life is a period that places high demands on the student. In the worst case, this can lead to stress, anxiety or depression.

If you as a teacher come across students who are feeling unwell, you can refer them to the Student Health Care Studenthälsan, where they can get in touch with a counsellor or nurse and make an appointment. The Student Health Service is for all students and works to prevent and promote health.

On the student web there is a lot of information aimed at students. As a teacher, it can be useful to know what information is available.

For example, students can get help to improve their skills in written assignments or get help with different maths problems.
